Peridot

Description

Most peridots are formed inside the earth and came to the surface by volcanic eruptions. Known as the Hawaiian Diamond, it’s thought to be the tears of the goddess Pele, the goddess of fire, lightening, wind, and volcanoes. One of the few gems that are not routinely treated, the richness of its color is truly natural. As one of the premier green gemstones, not surprisingly, people in medieval times confused peridots with emeralds. Such was the case with the 200ct of peridots adorning the shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral. Many historians now believe that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection may in fact have been peridots.
